What a GREAT 5th Sunday! We had as so many people gathered for the inspiring and WELCOME presentation from author and professor LORRI ALLEN! She left me three copies of her wonderful book, “It’s All Good News” ($15) and having read it myself, and now having heard her inspiring talk, I think you’ll love it too! First come – first served!
Happy Independence Day! I hope you all have happy plans for July 4th! It’s such a great day to remember that we live in the greatest country in the world! I realize that many people wouldn’t agree with me when I say that but having traveled to all continents in this world BUT Antarctica, I truly do believe we are richly blessed!
As I dusted off my “history books” to write this email, I was reminded that July 4th commemorates the day in 1776 that our nation declared itself to be an independent nation, and no longer a colony of England. On that date, a number of our leading citizens signed what is known as the Declaration of Independence, stating our determination to become a free country. (THIS is the document I’ve referred to often in the worship series we’re doing on the Beatitudes … the right to pursue happiness!) Our independence didn’t come easily … it began with war,  there were PLENTY of problems and controversies but our founders were determined to establish a free and democratic system of government, and the Declaration of Independence (together with our Constitution and the Bill of Rights) became the foundation for this. These documents have stood the test of time; and on July 4th, we give thanks for the wisdom and faith and courage of those leaders. In years past, Americans took time on July 4th to reflect on God’s goodness … and goodness it is!! I grew up in Philadelphia and a few years ago when I took my kids back to see the houses I grew up in, we also went to see the Liberty Bell. This beautiful, historic bell proclaimed our independence with these words from the Bible: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof” (Leviticus 25:10). We can’t deny the fact that our legal system reflects our Judeo-Christian roots!!
While we look with gratitude to the past on this July 4th, may we also look in faith to the future, and commit our lives to God and His will! The ancient words of the Psalmist are still true: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12).
