Welcome to First United Methodist Church Winnsboro, where all people are welcome all the time!                  (Even if it IS on social media!)

Out of an abundance of caution, but more out of an abundance of love, we have made the unprecedented decision to cancel all church activities until the Centers for Disease Control tell us its safe to be together again. Until then, we will continue the following:

– Sunday morning worship, 10:50 AM on Facebook
– Drive by our Church Street entrance on MONDAYS from 1-3 and say hello & receive a blessing – I’d love to see you!
– I will continue to do a morning devotional, also on Facebook 3-4 mornings a week
– We have mobilized people to make cloth FACE MASKS that are so desperately needed by our health care workers … CLICK HERE if you can sew or cut fabric!
– And we will PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!

 I want everyone to know … the buildings may be closed but GOD’S CHURCH is still worshiping, learning, loving and serving! SUNDAY WORSHIP will still be at 10:50 AM on Sundays but we will worship together, yes TOGETHER, live on Facebook instead of in the sanctuary!

We will still be checking in on our neighbors and doing our Lenten devotionals … we will still be PRAYING, maybe more now than ever! We’ll keep this page updated so stay tuned, Pastor Debbie

10-01-19 FUMC Update

It’s fall and there’s so much going on! Our 5th Sunday was WONDERFUL with Cheryl Estes sharing her faith story in a personal and powerful way, Sunday school groups are buzzing, new programs for youth and children are starting and our new worship series is off and running on the Apostles’ Creed! I am in Charlotte this week working to help my Dad through a difficult health transition; thanks for all your prayers!

CREDO for YOUTH begins this Sunday Night, October 6, 5-7:30 p.m. ~ Children and youth in 7th through 12th grades are meeting together for the next seven (7) weeks to understand what THEIR Credo is ~ What are their guiding principles and faith beliefs? This is a very important time in their lives, and they will have an opportunity to dive into some very deep faith topics and questions while exploring what their journey looks like. We will provide dinner each week, so please let us know if your kids will be there. Pastor Mike from Tinney Chapel and three of their kids will partner with us and we’ll be hanging out in the LOFT in the FLC this fall!

Children’s Church Starts October 13 ~ I’m so VERY excited to announce an addition to our existing Sunday morning Children’s Ministry program. As you know, every Sunday morning for many years Jane Noteware and Sandra Strickland have taught our elementary Sunday school class at 9:30 a.m. and the kids love them! This great program will continue thanks to their selfless service and THEIR love for your kids! We are now adding Children’s Church during worship. Come meet our new ministry leader, Paige Baber, on Wednesday, October 9, at 5:15 p.m. in the Family Life Center (just before our 5:45 Fellowship Meal).

Looking for a Place to Connect and Learn? Start with Sunday mornings ~
~ The Family Ties Sunday School Class will begin a study on the Book of James, 9:45 a.m., October 7 ~
The author, James, the brother of Jesus and the leader of the Jerusalem church, writes to the Jewish Christians, who have scattered throughout the Mediterranean world because of persecution. It is a practical guide for anyone seeking to live a life of faith and good works. James writes to those who are experiencing both external and internal trials. Come and study James with us and become a “doer” of the word. If you are not a member of this class but would like a copy of the weekly studies, please send Don Beaty your email address. Don’s e-mail address is donbeaty47@gmail.com
~ Coffee & Conversation class begins a new study on the Book of Acts, 9:30 a.m., October 14  ~
The book of Acts provides a bridge for the writings of the New Testament, and as a second volume to Luke’s Gospel, it joins what Jesus “began to do and to teach.” Geographically, its story spans the lands between Jerusalem where the church began and Rome the political center of the empire. Historically it recounts the first 30 years of the church. It is also a bridge that ties the church in its beginning with each succeeding age. This group is very conversational and discussion-oriented. Contact Amy Moss Amy.h.moss@gmail.com with questions or just come!

The United Methodist Women are Still Collecting Snacks ~ Please bring your individually packaged healthy treats by Wednesday, October 16, or bring them to the UMC meeting on Thursday, October 10, 10 a.m. in Asbury.

Half Truths Bible Study Series Continues, Wednesday, October 9, 6:30 p.m., Wesley Hall ~
God Only Gives Us What We Can Handle ~  You’ve heard it, you may have said it, but what’s REALLY behind it? You might rethink using this statement after we look at the biblical foundation of the words! Come have dinner at 5:45 p.m. then join us for a great discussion!

All Church Business Meeting, October 16, 6:30 p.m., Wesley Hall ~ Come hear about the plans for 2020 and a look back at 2019. This is the “official” reporting time for the Methodist Church and all members will have an opportunity to vote on the details and funding plans.

Planning Ahead ! We are Getting Ready to Launch a New Retirement Ministry! What will it look like? Why are we doing this? How can this focus help us make disciples for Jesus Christ? Shiela and Ted Haynes have invited us to their home to brainstorm and DREAM about what this new ministry might look like ~ Save The Date ~ Friday, October 25, 5-7 p.m.

9-24-19 FUMC Update

I’ve had such a great time diving into some of the common expressions we make as Christians, expressions that Adam Hamilton calls HALF TRUTHS. When I was digging into the topic for this Wednesday night, “God helps those who help themselves,” I realized that this was the way I was raised but I had to really step back and think about it. IF this is true, why would the Bible continually tell us to SERVE OTHERS? (CLICK HERE to read a few of them!) I hope you’ll join us for this conversational discussion on the Biblical foundations behind the words.

UMW Snack Drive for Wesley Rankin/Bethlehem Center Continues ~ These two wonderful agencies, supported by Methodist Churches all around Dallas, are collecting the following through October 16. Bring them Wednesday nights or Sunday mornings please:
* Animal Cracker single packs
* Rice Krispie treats
* Cheese It snack packs
* Peanut butter cracker snack packs
* Fruit cups
* Applesauce cups
* Goldfish snack packs
* Boxed juices
* Band-aids
* Neosporin packets
* Disposable gloves, all sizes

Annual Church Meeting ~ Charge Conference, Wednesday, October 16, 6:30 p.m. ~ Once a year the members of the church gather to approve new leaders, a ministry funding plan, and the goals for the new year.  Mark your calendar to join us!

Are You a Member of the Prayer Text Chain? We send prayer requests via text messages as soon as we get them, or between the hours of 8:30 am and 8:30 pm. PRAYER MATTERS, so please email fumc-winnsboro@suddenlinkmail.com if you’d like to be added to the prayer request hotline.

9-17-19 FUMC Updates

What a renewing and refreshing two weeks I enjoyed in one of the most magnificent states in our country, Alaska! The greatest thing about going away is coming home, and I’m jumping back in the swing of things FULL STEAM AHEAD as we move into my favorite season of fall! Many thanks to Brian Dierolf and Sue Gross who preached while I was away, and to Brother Henry for being “on-call” for emergencies. How lucky we are to be part of a connectional system where we can work together! I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL WEDNESDAY NIGHT!

THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT, 9/18, 6:30 p.m., After Dinner ~ “Everything Happens for a Reason” ~ For the next five weeks, we’ll be meeting in Wesley Hall to talk about what Adam Hamilton calls, HALF TRUTHS. These are common expressions that sound Biblical, but are they? I spent some time really thinking about these statements while I was gone, and I can’t wait to share in some engaging conversation with you!

COMMUNITY WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY, September 18 – November 13, 9 a.m., Asbury Hall ~ We are starting a new study by Jen Wilkin, l Peter: A Living Hope in Christ. Women from churches in our community are invited to come and bring a friend.  If you are interested in joining us for this uplifting study, please contact Linda Suche at 903-342-0886.

IMPORTANT YOUTH PARENT MEETING ~ THIS SUNDAY AFTER CHURCH, September 22, NOON, Wesley Hall ~ Parents/grandparents, if you have kids in middle or high school this is an important meeting to learn more about our fall program for the kids, Starting October 6, Mike Moore, the Pastor from Tinney Chapel, and I are working together to have a fast-paced and really in-depth conversation with the youth on FAITH! This is a VERY important meeting where we’ll talk about what profession of faith is all about and what it means to be a Methodist, and we’ll lay out the whole fall program for you which will include SUNDAY EVENING light dinners and workshops, broken into age groups, starting October 6.

5th SUNDAY All Church Gathering is COMING, September 29, 9:30 a.m., Wesley Hall  ~ As you know, our 5th Sundays this year have been an opportunity for everyone in the church who does NOT have a Sunday school class they attend regularly, and for all existing Sunday school classes to come TOGETHER for coffee and donuts and a guest speaker.  Just wanted to give you a heads up that our next guest speaker will be Cheryl Estes. Cheryl is very active in her church, Grace Fellowship, and has a wonderful testimony and a PASSION for mission trips. Cheryl is extremely active in the community. In fact, I serve with Cheryl on the Board of the Cultural Arts District, and I have seen her exhibit clear and passionate proclamation for Jesus Christ as the owner of Copper Leaf on Main Street, and as President of the Winnsboro Merchant’s Association. Cheryl will also update us on how their church is recovering from the tragic loss of their pastor. Please come and be part of the 5th Sunday energy!

NEW WORSHIP SERIES STARTS THIS SUNDAY, September 22 ~ I have been thinking a LOT about what we believe as Christians and what we believe as METHODISTS and I’m excited to spend the next six Sundays talking about what we REALLY mean when we say the Apostles’ Creed.

8-27-19 FUMC Update

Happy Labor Day! Somehow with school going back so early in August, Labor Day doesn’t see to get to “three-day weekend joy” it used to get but it’s still worth recognizing! Did you know The United Methodist Church has been a part of the labor movement throughout history and is committed to fairness and justice in the workplace?

In the early 20th century the church worked to end child labor; and in the ’50s, during our country’s civil rights movement, we fought for fair wages and better working conditions. We were dedicated to fairness and justice in the workplace then, and we still are today.

When John Wesley founded the Methodist movement during the 18th century, there was no “labor movement” the way we’d understand it today but Wesley preached to and cared for coal miners and other oppressed workers. He also opposed slavery. After Wesley died, his followers continued to work against workplace injustices in rapidly industrializing England, adopting the first Social Creed, which, in 1908, dealt exclusively with labor practices.

So, all that being said … HAPPY LABOR DAY!

This Sunday, The Choir Gets a Break! Danny has been doing such a great job with the choir that they didn’t want to take any time off this summer; so this Sunday, they get to enjoy the worship service! Mary White is going to work with me in worship and we will be blessed to hear her BEAUTIFUL piano playing!

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS MEALS ARE BACK ~ 5:45 in the FLC ~ The last I heard, we are having Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans, and your love offerings are greatly appreciated! If you’re invited to deliver a meal to one of our homebound folks, please say yes!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE? Part 2: HELL ~ 6:30 in Wesley Hall Last week we had a speed course in many of the scriptures related to heaven. This week will be much less scripture driven because, well, there aren’t nearly as many scriptures about HELL! If we have time, I DO want to spend a few minutes talking about “End Times,” the rapture and tribulations theories. Very interesting! Hope to see you all there!

WALK TO EMMAUS UPDATE ~ Please be in prayer for JOHN HARGUS who will be attending the next Men’s Walk (September 19-22) and Ann Williams who will be attending the Women’s Walk (October 17-20). If you are still considering being part of this exceptional retreat weekend, let us know ASAP!  FYI, the weekend starts Thursday evening and goes through Sunday. And you’ll hear 15 talks about God’s grace and love with activities that follow. There is singing, LOTS of eating, dress is casual, and the time FLIES by!!

THIS SUNDAY ~ Our worship series on GOD in the MOVIES comes to an end with the movies that was the #1 pick by 70% of the respondents, The Green Mile. This difficult film has so many possible messages but I plan to focus on MIRACLES. I pray God blesses you in His word!

I hope to see you all Wednesday night!

8-13-19 FUMC Update

How great it was to see our BALCONY with so many young families on Sunday. Seeing the kids back was so exciting, and they bring such energy and joy to us all! Now that school will be back and schedules will be leveling out, we hope that the balcony is OVERFLOWING with families. Be sure to invite those you know will LOVE being “upstairs” and part of our AMAZING congregation!

SPEAKING OF KIDS  ~ Every Sunday morning at 9:30, Sandra Strickland and Jane Noteware teach our elementary kids K-6 about the love of Christ! (Please be sure to THANK them!) They use video, games, stories, and activities to engage the kids and if your kids aren’t yet plugged in, there is LOTS of love waiting for them in WESLEY HALL!

Parents ~ There is a brand new Sunday school that YOU can be part of while your kids are in class. The Coffee and Conversation group is starting an 8-10 week study, and they would LOVE for you to join them!

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DIE? Wednesdays, August 21 and 28, 6:30 pm ~ This is one of the most OFTEN asked questions of life, yet no one ever wants to talk about it! We’re talking about it now. We will start with HEAVEN (8/21); and then the following week (8/28), we’ll talk about hell. This is a SCRIPTURAL study and handouts will be available, so I hope you’ll come for dinner in FLC then join us in WESLEY HALL.

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR GENEROSITY! We delivered hundreds of dollars of undies and socks to the school nurse for the three WISD schools, and she was BLOWN away by our generosity! We also collected $480 of GIFT CARDS that will be split between the Middle and High School counselors to get exactly what the kids need! Thanks for your ABOVE AND BEYOND giving!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEALS ARE BACK, August 21st ~ Don’t miss our first Wednesday night fellowship meal. We are all excited to be back after our summer hiatus! Your generous love offerings not only pay for the food but any net money is always donated to great ministries of the church. Many thanks to ALL our kitchen team who selflessly plan, shop, cook, and clean week after week for us ALL!

NO DESSERTS? OH NO!! ~ Many thanks to ALL the people who have been meaning to sign up for the SWEET TEAM but just haven’t gotten around to it. Now is the time! We only need two people each week to bring two desserts ONCE A MONTH and your schedule will the same week of each month. In the event you need a substitute, Betty Gilbert will take care of it. Thank you for helping make the Wednesday evenings special for our Church Family. Doing a little can mean a lot! CONTACT BETTYE TODAY @ bjhhnow@gmail.com or phone 903-342-6698.

August Worship Series Continues ~ OUR worship series GOD IN THE MOVIES continues this week with a look at “Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People” ~ THE SHACK. (This week should be much easier than The DaVinci Code. If you missed this past Sunday, you can watch it on Facebook!)
