Welcome to First United Methodist Church Winnsboro, where all people are welcome all the time!                  (Even if it IS on social media!)

Out of an abundance of caution, but more out of an abundance of love, we have made the unprecedented decision to cancel all church activities until the Centers for Disease Control tell us its safe to be together again. Until then, we will continue the following:

– Sunday morning worship, 10:50 AM on Facebook
– Drive by our Church Street entrance on MONDAYS from 1-3 and say hello & receive a blessing – I’d love to see you!
– I will continue to do a morning devotional, also on Facebook 3-4 mornings a week
– We have mobilized people to make cloth FACE MASKS that are so desperately needed by our health care workers … CLICK HERE if you can sew or cut fabric!
– And we will PRAY, PRAY, PRAY!

 I want everyone to know … the buildings may be closed but GOD’S CHURCH is still worshiping, learning, loving and serving! SUNDAY WORSHIP will still be at 10:50 AM on Sundays but we will worship together, yes TOGETHER, live on Facebook instead of in the sanctuary!

We will still be checking in on our neighbors and doing our Lenten devotionals … we will still be PRAYING, maybe more now than ever! We’ll keep this page updated so stay tuned, Pastor Debbie

6-24-19 FUMC Update

What an amazing worship we had on Sunday! Sooooooo much energy from the choir and it was contagious throughout the whole congregation! As I mentioned last week, our choir members come every Wednesday night and every Sunday morning regardless of who the pastor is, who the music director is, how many people are in worship or not. Every week they work hard to make worship “worshipful” and I’m grateful to them all! Also, a BIG thanks to Danny McMahon for stepping in as our temporary leader and bringing new songs and teaching new music. We have begun the process to find a new Music Minister so please be prayerful about this!

Another BIG thanks to the 19 people who have given generously to the fund that will pay the $5000 deductible for the roof and the $5000 for the choir room! Our property is the biggest asset this church owns (and it’s debt free!), so to be able to obtain a brand new roof ($154,000) and a completely renovated choir room ($60,000) for only $10,000 is AMAZING!! Yes, we pay substantial premiums for insurance, but when the unexpected storms, accidents, etc. happen, we’re ready!

Don’t miss the 5th SUNDAY ALL CHURCH GATHERING this Sunday:  June 30, 9:30 a.m., Wesley Hall ~ We’re so excited to welcome ALL Sunday school classes and ALL people in the church and community to come for coffee and donuts to meet Lorri Allen … reporter, anchor and producer (CBS 19, Tyler) radio host, Professor of Communication at UT Tyler, and Christian author. With a Master’s Degree from the Walter Cronkite school of Journalism, Lorri brings amazing stories, wit, and Christian HOPE to her inspiring message so join us for a focus on GOOD NEWS!

WHAT’S HAPPENING AROUND THE CHURCH?  Here’s the link to the CALENDAR . If you’re planning ahead, be sure to SAVE THIS DATE … Tuesday, July 16, 5:45 pm, UMW 150th Birthday Celebration! A great meal, amazing entertainment (Cross Strings Bluegrass Band), and of course, cake and ice cream! All money raised will go to local missions and we’ll have more details as we get closer.

Hope to see you Sunday as our UPSIDE-DOWN worship series continues. This week with a look at the 4th Beatitude, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DIE? This Wednesday night, June 19, 6:30 pm after the fellowship meal (5:45pm) ~

Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”

When he had said this, he breathed his last. (Luke 23:46)

Obviously, the subject of death is relevant to every person because unless our Lord Jesus comes first, we’ll ALL experience it! And while there are many things we WANT to know, the Biblical references don’t give us all the answers, just the most important ones! Come explore the scriptures that give us a glorious picture of what is to come. I’ll have a handout of all the scriptures for you to take home.
~~~~~~~~~
MUSIC is such an important part of WORSHIP and if you were in Church on Sunday you heard the disappointing news that our Music Minister, JC Waddell, resigned last Monday. I’m sure you’ll feel the same range of emotions I FELT when I got the news but his letter is attached. I told JC when he resigned that perhaps, in the future, things might change and he could come back, and he also assured me he’d still be willing to do solos or play an instrument occasionally. I want to also remind everyone that when JC and Stacy DO come to church, we will embrace them as FAMILY because that’s who they are!!
I also shared with everyone that your Leadership Team is COMMITTED to moving forward in finding a NEW Music Minister. I do believe that God DOES work for good in all things for those who love Him (Romans 8:28) and He IS already paving the way for our next leader! Please be in prayer for us as we begin the search process.
WE HAVE A NEW ROOF and WE’RE GETTING A NEW CHOIR ROOM and we’d LOVE your help! I also made this announcement yesterday and wow, what an AMAZING example of how God DOES work for good! If you haven’t been at the church this week to see all the ROOFING going on, it’s been noisy and messy. But wow, these men worked HARD and they worked FAST! You also know that the CHOIR room flooded in that 5” storm of rain a few weeks ago and the insurance adjusters estimate it will be an almost $60,000 renovated, fresh, new choir room when it’s all repaired!
The GOOD news is that for many years we have paid into our insurance so we only had to pay our deductible, the BAD news is, because it was two separate storms, one HAIL and one RAIN, we have 2 different deductibles of $5000 each or a $10,000, an expense that is not part of the regular budget. BUT … WE ARE GETTING more than $200,000 in needed repairs for only $10,000!
It took about 68,640 shingles to repair the roof, so including labor, that is about $2.24 cents a shingle. This doesn’t sound like a lot BUT, just think … our average attendance is 93 so if we did NOT have insurance we would have to be praying for each person to contribute $1,600! YIKES! THANK YOU GOD FOR INSURANCE! Instead, we only have to pay the deductible and guess what, if all 93 people would only pay $108 sacrificially, in addition to their regular offering, you could say, in actuality, you helped buy 738 shingles to help build the value of most IMPORTANT asset we have as a church!
Imagine … if you were to give, just a little MORE than your regular 10% in the next few months, how good it would feel to say you were part of improving this great church God gave us! I told everyone on Sunday that I SCHEDULE my offering to be drafted for direct deposit right to God, but I wanted to be the FIRST to give my additional check! Won’t you join me and prayerfully consider writing an additional check for $108 or $216 or any amount God is CALLING you to make … please mark ROOF in the memo line … God will be SMILING!
MANY THANKS to so many of our choir members who are working HARD in our choir room today to get it organized and cleaned out, get the music categorized and sorted, and get READY for a beautiful new room!
6-12-19 FUMC Updates
It was a great Sunday at FUMC! We were thrilled to be part of 4th generation Rhiannon Karol Kay Sherman’s baptism as her parents, Kelsey and Bear, and her grandparents, Misty and Chip, and her GREAT-grandfather, Ken Atkins, stood by! It was also exciting to have so many family friends attend the service. You have no idea how great it was to have so many people on the front rows – and the Spirit of God was being poured into people in a BIG way!  WOW, what an amazing day!
ROOF REPLACEMENT HAPPENING NOW ~ If you haven’t been at the church this week to see all the ROOFING going on, it’s been noisy. And messy. But wow, these men are working FAST and the work should be done by Friday! You may have also seen our request on FACEBOOK for GUESSES as to how many shingles it will take to re-roof ALL our buildings except FLC (thank you God for the metal roof!). What do YOU think? (I’ll give you the answer on Sunday!) If you’ll be coming to church this week, park AWAY from the building where nails could be damaging. The contractor will do their BEST to pick up the nails but just be careful!
ASBURY HALL UPDATES CONTINUE ~ We cleaned up the craft room and the quilters room, and now we’re getting ready to repaint the large classroom in Asbury. Please bear with us and BE KIND AND THANKFUL TO/FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS!
The Women’s Bible Study starts back up next Wednesday , 6/19 at 9 am ~ While we’re continuing our ongoing renovation in ASBURY HALL, please meet in WESLEY Hall for the next few weeks. Everyone is welcome!
The next Wednesday night meal is JUNE 19th, 5:45 pm ~ We hope you’ll all plan to come! Pastor Debbie invites everyone to join her after the meal for a biblical look at WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DIE?  This month, we’ll talk about HEAVEN; but in August, we’ll look at HELL, so please plan to stay for this spiritual conversation. Scripture handouts will be available.
The Winnsboro Photography Club ~ Getting ready for a great meeting on their regular evening, the last Monday of the Month, June 24 at 5:30 in the Family Life Center. This is a great opportunity to invite a friend and come explore a new hobby or grow in your EXISTING one!
THIS SUNDAY the Upside-Down message of the Beatitudes continues as we look at HAPPY MOURNERS. Yes, it sounds like an oxymoron, but it isn’t! If you missed the introductory message on June 2, watch it on Facebook (our front rows were filled so the camera is further back than normal) or listen on the website.
6-05-19 FUMC Update
It’s summer! Not officially, of course. That doesn’t come until June 21, but in our hearts and minds, summer started after Memorial Day! Summer is the time when the flowers are in full bloom, the sun rays are beating down, and the bees won’t give up swarming all around! It’s the season when children and teachers are out of school, the time when many families take vacations together, and the time when birds are the new alarm clocks for many people.
There is so much freedom that comes along with this incredible season, especially for teachers and students who get a few weeks to unwind and relax. But it’s also a season that showcases a circle of life! Where will GOD fit into your circle in these short few weeks of summer? How will you stay connected to Church so the “habits” of summer don’t strip away the value you get from being in community with others and with Christ? I hope we have an AWESOME summer together … and I hope it starts this Sunday with our brand NEW worship series!
UPSIDE DOWN: The Greatest Sermon Ever Told ~ Starting this Sunday, we begin a teaching series on the Beatitudes (MAT 5:1-11). While the whole sermon continues through Matthew chapter 7, the Beatitudes are a very special list of commands on how God plans to BLESS us … and please know this … there are conditions to these blessings!
KATHRYN CLARK’S  Celebration of Life ~ Please join us to support James and his family, Friday, June 7, 1 pm in the sanctuary; reception to greet the family following the service in Wesley Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Kathryn’s name to the Church.
NEXT WEDNESDAY NIGHT MEAL is WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19 … and we’d love YOUR help please! Thanks to Bettye Gilbert who coordinates our DESSERTS. We need DESSERT volunteers for the three dates of our summer Fellowship meals ~ Wednesday, June 19; Tuesday, July 16; Wednesday, August 21. We have been blessed by the volunteers through the year so let’s give them a break before we plan for the next school year. Betty only needs 6 people to step up and make 2 desserts just one time during the summer. Please call Bettye at 972-342-6698 or email her at bjhh@suddenlink.net.
WE’RE BEING FAITHFUL STEWARDS OF OUR ENERGY COSTS THIS SUMMER ~ Now that the temperatures are rising, we are doing everything we can to manage the high summer costs of electricity. If you are the last one out of the building, please do not turn OFF the thermostat, but please DO turn the AC up to 85-86 degrees. (This is most efficient for the belts and operating system costs.) Also, in Wesley Hall, we do not cool the kitchen or Fellowship Halls in order to keep the classrooms cool, so if you OPEN those doors, please keep them closed. We have also moved small groups meeting in Asbury Hall over to the small classroom in the FLC where there is one small unit that cools just that one room, as opposed to cooling all of Asbury Hall. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, let us know!
SEE YOU ALL ON SUNDAY!
